Families on the Fly: What to Expect from TSA’s New Family-Friendly Security Lanes
Travel Update: TSA Launches “Families on the Fly” Program to Ease Airport Stress for Families
Air travel with kids isn’t always the easiest — but the TSA’s new “Families on the Fly” initiative is working to change that. Officially announced by the Department of Homeland Security this summer, this program focuses on making the airport security process smoother and less stressful for families traveling with children, while keeping strong security standards in place.
As someone who’s guided countless families through destination travel, I know how overwhelming airports can feel — especially with little ones in tow. That’s why this new rollout is worth paying attention to.
What Is “Families on the Fly”?
This TSA program introduces dedicated perks and streamlined security options for families, including:
– Family-specific screening lanes at select airports to help reduce wait times and ease the experience.
– Discounted TSA PreCheck enrollment for families — enrollment fees will be reduced to $85 per person (down from $100).
– Expanded TSA PreCheck access for military families, including dedicated lanes at more airports.
– Commitment to ease without compromising security, helping parents move through checkpoints faster without sacrificing safety.
Where It’s Available (and Where It’s Coming Soon)
The program has already launched at:
- Orlando International Airport (MCO) – Pilot program live (Summer 2025)
- Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT) – Pilot program live (Summer 2025)
Coming soon to:
- John Wayne Orange County Airport (SNA) – Santa Ana, CA
- Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) – Honolulu, HI
- Charleston International Airport (CHS) – Charleston, SC
- Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) – Jacksonville, FL
- T.F. Green International Airport (PVD) – Providence, RI
- Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) – San Juan, PR
- Tampa International Airport (TPA) – Tampa, FL
Tip: While exact rollout dates for the remaining airports haven’t been announced, TSA has confirmed more locations will be added throughout fall 2025 and beyond.
Good to Know: Military Families, Veterans & Accessibility Support
This effort is part of a broader push by TSA to improve travel for a variety of travelers:
- Military personnel and DOD civilians already get free TSA PreCheck by entering their DOD ID number as their Known Traveler Number.
- Children under 12 always accompany parents/guardians in PreCheck lanes, and teens 13–17 can join if on the same reservation.
- The “Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease” campaign continues to expand fast-track options near major military hubs.
- TSA Cares remains available to assist travelers with disabilities, veterans, and anyone needing personalized support navigating security.

Why This Matters for Families
From personal experience planning family getaways and milestone events, I know the security process is one of the biggest pain points. These changes won’t eliminate every travel hiccup — but for families, fewer lines, less juggling of strollers and snacks, and quicker security checks mean a less stressful start to your vacation.
