Heads up to our wedding couples and frequent travelers: Starting today, May 28, Southwest Airlines is making major changes—and for those who’ve relied on their free checked bag policy, this marks a big shift.

For years, Southwest stood out by allowing two checked bags at no extra cost, which was especially helpful for destination wedding couples packing attire, décor, and guest items. That long-standing perk is officially going away.

Here’s what to know:

  • First checked bag: $35
  • Second checked bag: $45
  • These fees apply to flights booked or voluntarily changed on or after May 28.

A few travelers will still benefit from free bags:

Southwest is also rolling out a new Basic fare to replace Wanna Get Away. This new fare level comes with fewer perks. Seat assignments will be given at check-in, and boarding will happen last. Once assigned seating launches next year, it will resemble basic economy fares on other airlines.

Another change to be aware of: Travel credits issued starting today will now expire after one year. Previously, credits did not expire.

This update is especially important for our destination wedding travelers who often pack heavier than usual. If you’re unsure how this affects your plans or need help navigating the options, we’re always here to guide you. You may also view Southwest Airlines’ baggage policy here.
